Runtime Environment

APPX is also the environment your applications run in. Every APPX application works the same way for the people who use it, whether they reach it from the desktop client, a web browser or a terminal.

One way of working for every application

APPX draws the menus, screens and reports for every application, so they all behave the same way. Keys, buttons, lists and prompts work alike from one application to the next, and people learn them once. A new application does not mean new habits.

How people connect

  • APPX Desktop Client, installed on Windows or Linux.
  • The HTML client, in a web browser. A small helper program, the Local Connector, adds uploading, downloading and opening files on the user’s own computer; it runs on 64-bit Windows, macOS and Linux.
  • Character mode, on a terminal or terminal emulator.

Clients sign in through connection services that the APPX Login Manager sets up and runs on the server.

Your data

APPXIO, APPX’s own high-performance file system, comes with APPX. Files can also live in Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL or MySQL. Which one a file uses is set for that file, not written into the application’s logic.

Other software can reach APPX data as well. APPX/ODBC Server lets tools such as Crystal Reports, Microsoft Access and Excel work with APPXIO files, and the Data API lets APPX subroutines answer requests from web servers and other web services.

Servers

APPX runs on Linux and Windows servers, and also on IBM AIX, HP-UX and Solaris. The downloads page lists the releases for each.
