Icon Usage

As part of the graphical design of the suite of APPX financial applications, standards have been adopted for icon usage which combine symbols with color. Note that, in the examples given below, 'IS' refers to the Initial Setup phase of operation and 'RP' refers to the Recovery Processing phase.

Symbols have the following general connotations:

Data entry

File maintenance

Report or listing

Inquiry

Processing, posting, or updating

Colors have the following general connotations:

Transaction-related function

File-related function

Routine or incidental function

IS or special purpose function

RP, critical, or EOM/EOY function

Symbol/color combinations have more specific connotations as shown in the examples below:

Transaction entry

Transaction journal

Transaction audit info inquiry

Transaction post

File maintenance

File listing

File audit information inquiry

Routine or incidental report

Routine or incidental inquiry

IS or special entry function

IS or special file maintenance

IS or special forms/report

IS or special update function

RP Post in Progress Flag Reset

RP File Edit

EOM/EOY report

EOM/EOY/RP update function

End IS or RP phase

Note that lime-colored or magnifying glass symbols denote functions that you can run at will without any consequence. Yellow-colored icons suggest a more cautionary approach, while red-colored icons command the most respect.

In some cases, you will find that the icon associated with the menu item is a different color from the icon associated with the function itself. This is because the same function may be called from two or more menus, and may behave differently depending upon the context in which it is called. For example, the same file maintenance process may be called in both Initial Setup and Live Operations but there may be fields you can modify in Initial Setup that cannot be changed in Live Operations. The color of the menu item icon therefore should take precedence.
